Charles "Chuck" Jesse Brooks
January 14, 1928 ~ July 8, 2024
Chuck was born and raised, living his entire 96 years in Grants Pass, Oregon. He was the second of three children born to Charles and Pearl Brooks. He outlived his siblings, Iris Lee and Edwin Brooks.
Chuck was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Coast Guard.
When Chuck first met Retha, introduced by best friends, Gene & Lois Rightmier, Chuck was 19, Retha only 13. Realizing she was too young to date, Chuck began spending significant amounts of time with Retha's father…working on cars, etc. Finally, winning father's approval, they married 4 years later, June 29, 1951. (Jacob & Rebekah?)
Chuck worked in the lumber and plywood industry for many years, retiring when Southern Oregon Plywood closed down in the mid-80's.
Chuck enjoyed camping, reading, gardening, watching sports and playing his harmonica. He was skilled at bread-baking and soup-making but he excelled in pickling. A quart of his blue ribbon sweet pickles was a must have for family and friends.
Chuck also enjoyed traveling, especially visiting Israel and many European countries. He also enjoyed cruising to Alaska and the Caribbean but it is was cruising through the Panama Canal that fulfilled a childhood dream.
Chuck had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and attended Parkway Christian Center. He was also an active member of the Gideon's ministry.
Chuck and Retha celebrated their 73rd anniversary just a week prior to his home-going. He always had a twinkle in his eye for his bride.
Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue Arthur. He is survived by his wife Retha, son Dave Brooks (Karen), daughter Debbie Graeber, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
