Carroll Louis Newcomb was born on January 26, 1931, on a farm outside Grand Ledge, Michigan to Warren and Maude (Blasier) Newcomb. He attended Grand Ledge High School where he excelled in music as a trumpeter and was selected as a member of the Michigan All-State High School Band & Orchestra. He attended Olivet Nazarene College and Northwest Nazarene College for three years where he continued his studies in music.
Carroll served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as an electrician and maintenance specialist. It was while stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington he met Delight Smith. They were married in Spokane on April 5, 1952.
Carroll and Delight raised three sons in Temple City, California where they lived in the San Gabriel Valley for 21 years. Those years were filled with many memorable events and activities including Carroll’s leadership of the music program at Temple City Church of the Nazarene as well as school music and sports programs with his three sons.
In 1977 Carroll and Delight moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where they built their home. During their 35 years together in Grants Pass, Carroll continued engaged in a full schedule including his commitment to Christian service and discipleship, his love for his family, and his interest in woodworking.
Carroll’s hobbies included woodworking, gardening, and being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Carroll is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Delight Newcomb of Grants Pass; three sons and their spouses, Warren and Gail Newcomb and Michael and Pam Newcomb all of Grants Pass and Randy and Pam Newcomb of San Francisco, California; and seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Maude Newcomb when only sixteen years old. He was also preceded in death by his father, Warren Newcomb and his two sisters; Norva Haskell and Barbara Van Antwerp.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Carroll will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Merlin Community Baptist Church in Merlin, Oregon.
The family will gather for a private interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
