Former Grants Pass Rural Fire Department owner and chief, Bertha B. Miller, age 83, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday January 24, 2012 at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Vitality Center, corner of 4th & L Streets in Grants Pass. Private interment will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Bertha Miller was born December 8, 1928 in Leland, Oregon to William P. and Eva Long. In July 1948 she married Ronald Miller and began raising a family. They purchased Grants Pass Rural Fire Department in 1959 which she owned and operated until health issues forced her to retire in 2007. She continued to serve the community by donating her time freely to many organizations. In her journey of life she raised five children and a foster son. Over the years her family grew to include many members of the community.
In 2007 she was invited to Washington D.C. where she was honored at a banquet with the prestigious Older Worker Award. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading, giving to others, serving her community and spending time with her family.
Survivors include 4 daughters, Karren Cohen and Neva Harris both of Grants Pass, Oregon, Mary Miller of Greenville, Pennsylvania, and Tena Price of Medford, Oregon, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, two brothers and her son Walter.
