Barbara J. Banes

Barbara J. Banes, age 82, of Grants Pass, died Monday, November 25, 2013 at an adult foster home.

No services are planned at this time. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Barbara was born July 23, 1931 in Phoenix, Arizona to Alfons & Loretta Meyer. She enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War stationed in Japan. Barbara was a WAC and attained the rank of Corporal. She served her country from 1949 until 1951 when she was honorably discharged. While living in Japan she met and married Norman Wilson Katchka and they later divorced. She then married Chuck Banes, a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force and after 13 years of marriage they divorced. She lived in Ephrata, Washington where she worked as a telephone operator. In 1980 she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and worked as a toll investigator for the telephone company. In 1994 she moved to Colorado Springs to retire and live near her sons. She moved from Colorado Springs to Grants Pass in 1996.

She was a member of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Riverside Ward and she enjoyed singing in the choir.

Barbara enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing piano and dining out.

Survivors include three sons, Stephen Katchka of Grants Pass; Mike Banes of Denver, Colorado and Eric Banes of Langley, Washington; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was a son, David Banes and her former husbands, Norman Katchka and Chuck Banes.
