Barbara Eno Root, age 96, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at an adult care home.
Barbara was born September 4, 1918 in New York City, New York. From age three she resided in San Francisco, California. She attended Girls High School, the University of California and numerous other colleges without receiving a degree although she continued to take courses throughout her life.
She was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco until she enlisted in the WAAC July 17, 1942. She served in various capacities as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Army from 1942 to 1958 and attained the rank of Major. Her primary detail was Adjutant General Corps. She was employed by the California State Department of Employment from 1961 until retirement in 1977 when she moved to Oregon. She lived in Coronado, California from 1985 to 1989 when she returned to Oregon. She served as a member of the Seventh Battalion of the Oregon National Guard Reserve.
Barbara was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Military Order of World Wars, WAVES National (Honorary), Women’s Army Corps Veterans Association, Women in Military Service for America, and St. Andrews Anglican Church.
She was preceded in death by her long time friend and companion Audrey Jane Barron on April 20, 2000.
No services are planned. The cremated remains will be scattered at sea by the United States Coast Guard. A memorial marker will be placed at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
