Alice was born Alice Sutherland Pedersen on November 17, 1923 in Los Angeles, California to Stanley and Jessie Pedersen. She grew up in Glendale, California where she graduated from Glendale High School and attended Business College. Alice supported the war effort during WWII by working at air depots in Sacramento and Long Beach, California. In 1943 she married her first husband Bud Bayless. Following the war, she wanted to ‘see the world’ so volunteered for Foreign Service duty and was sent to Tokyo, Japan where she worked for General Douglas MacArthur as a member of the occupation forces. She was then stationed at the embassy in Hong Kong where she met her second husband, Donald Boyd and gave birth to her son Steven. Shortly after that she returned to Southern California where she worked for many years as a librarian for the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and eventually retired from the library at San Jose State University. She lived in La Crescenta, California and Gilroy, California until 2009 when she moved with her family to the Applegate Valley of southern Oregon.
Alice had two great passions; the outdoors and travel. Every year she would visit unusual destinations, most often by car with her latest canine companion. Destinations included; Inuvik, a town north of the Arctic Circle, exploring British Columbia, Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula, roving across the U.S. multiple times and attending the unusual Burning Man celebration, in her 80’s no less! Upon return from these trips, she would regale her many friends and family with fascinating and often humorous stories and detailed descriptions of her adventures. She was also a lover of animals, donating generously to charities in that regard.
Alice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Steven and Shellie; grandsons Jason, Carl and Kyle; and six great-grandchildren, all of the Grants Pass area. She is also survived by a niece Diane, and three nephews David, Doug and Chris and a great many friends and fellow adventurers.
