Agnes Marie "Aggie" Pope

Agnes Marie “Aggie” Pope passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024, at the age of 86, in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Born to Thomas Howard Ritter and Mary Anna Hrushka/Franks on September 9th, 1937 in Prairie City, Oregon. In her early childhood, she grew up in eastern Oregon. The family moved to the Selma area in the Illinois Valley around 1950. She attended Kerby Union High School in Kerby, Oregon. She received her GED from Rogue Community College in 1963.

In March 1953, she married Carl Allen Pope (aka Jim Pope), in Medford, Oregon. Carl passed away in 2012. They were married for 59 years. Together they had three children, Jimmy Allen Pope (Sr), Thomas Dudley Pope, & Sandra Marie (Pope) Box.

While Carl was in the Army in the latter 1950s and was stationed in Hawaii, Aggie and young son Jimmy joined him. Their second son, Thomas, was born there. After military duty, the family moved to Prospect, Oregon for Carl’s work, and that is where they were living when their daughter, Sandra, was born.

The family also lived in Bandon, Oregon for a brief time while Carl worked for BLM. To earn extra money for the home front. Aggie & the older children worked in the cranberry bogs & picked green pinecones for the local nurseries to harvest & plant the seeds.

After Carl retired, Aggie worked for various logging companies as a night watchman for their logging sites in the Southern Oregon area. They would camp at these logging sites. She worked for a time as a care provider through the State of Oregon’s Senior Services.

Aggie was a member of the Deer Creek Grange, Kerbyville Museum, and the Selma Baptist Church. She helped Carl as a volunteer/member and caretaker of the Deer Creek Cemetery Association.

She enjoyed arts & crafts, reading, working in her flower bed and gardening, elk hunting and traveling. She had a passion for local history. The family made several eastern Oregon historical scenic trips in the earlier years. In later years, she would often take her grandkids on historical expeditions in the Selma & Illinois Valley area.

She also loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children – Jimmy Pope Sr., and wife Julie, Selma, OR, & Sandra (Pope) Box and husband Lonnie Box Sr., also of Selma, OR. Five Grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A. Pope, parents, Thomas & Mary Ritter, and three siblings, Lois Colleen Carter, Howard John Ritter, and Mary Esther Campbell. Aggie is also preceded in death by her son Thomas D. Pope, and grandson Lonnie Box Jr.

Aggie’s funeral will be at the Selma Babtist Church, Thursday July 11, 2024, at 11:00 AM. A brief grave-side ceremony gathering after the service at Deer Creek Cemetery. There will also be a potluck gathering at the church annex following the interment.
